I rented a small, indoor, air conditioned and heated space for 4-5 months. One day I locked my padlock on the access door, but the bolt wasn't slid into place so anyone could open the overhead door to my space. The office called me to let me know the same day it happened. I have no idea how they spotted it but I thought this was exceptional.

I had to move from NC in the middle of the first wave of the pandemic and everyone was so very helpful with all the logistics so that it was a breeze when I showed up. "My partner and I moved out of this facility, but I still wanted to implore people to find somewhere else for storage. We didn’t like this place as it continued to get worse. The rates kept going up at random times and it just became so expensive for a simple outdoor unit. This is also includes with your already high rate, that you will have to shovel around your unit as they don’t completely clear the snow in the winter time for outdoor units. So you will have fun shoveling some snow around the door to your unit while paying a high price every month. I would skip this place. My partner and I are glad we are out of there."
"Don’t know why there are so many 5-star reviews here. Didn’t have a good experience when I was here. This place will randomly raise your rate, which is already overpriced, this is on top of not being able to get to your unit in the snow since they don’t clear by the doors I guess. There is also no garbage available to guest which is ridiculous when you are easily paying hundreds of dollars every month."

"Ongoing rental rate for online rental reservation is a lie! Dont do it! I've been a customer for almost a year here with the "(on going)" rate and just had my rent raised its outrageous. I told them there was tons of snow in front of every storage unit and they said they would not call the snow removal crew back out to correct the mistake"

When I hesitated to walk to see a unit, because of an injury, he picked up on it and went out of his way to load boxes, get doors and help me see a unit close to the office. This attitude of care and genuine service didn't happen only the first time I visited, it has been consistent every time. "While the place is good for storage, Sean was too busy to help. Unable to find my keys, he greeted me w a lackluster can i help you after not saying anything and looking at me. Explained my situation and said it would cost $40 but he couldnt do it then for he was leaving at 5:00 (when they close), apparently he said it takes 20 minutes to grind the key down. Whatever. Make sure if you need something from this place you dont do it close to closing, never mind helping out a customer or staying an extra 5 minutes past your shift. Shame on you."
"Dave Cole was the person who helped me today. Very nice and professional. At the same time friendly and quick. He got me what I needed within 10 minutes and I was out of there quick. He even swept the floor himself, even though it wasn't that bad. I also think it is a very good deal compared to other storage places around."
"Yeah, I had to start my rental explaining to these idiots how insurance work. First, they didn't tell me I need an insurance policy to open a unit. Which, of course, they don't want to, because when you show up without one, they will let you buy a policy from them.... nice move, huh? Then when I refused to buy their policy, they said I'd have to produce my homeowners policy, and I said no, I'm storing a vehicle. My HO policy, nor does anyone's, cover automobiles. The said that is their policy, and without it I'd be forced to buy theirs. I said, look, you can have my auto policy as I'm only store one vehicle. that's it. Nope, called to the manager, and he knew less than the clerk. So, long story short, they sold me their BS policy until I could prove I had a HO policy. Which I did a few days later, then credited me their over priced policy, but it was beyond absurd."

"Our family is moving out of our house soon, so we wanted to temporarily get a storage space to move the excess clutter that we wanted to keep into a high-quality facility with climate control, especially in this relentless summer Chicago heat.
We rented the unit last week, and the facility itself is solid. I can feel the A/C on in the building, it is very secure, and the spaces are high and spacious. No real complaints about the actual space.
However, the customer service for the first week here has been lousy at best. There were several issues that we ran into.
1) When we originally rented the space last week, the sales associate essentially required us to buy one of their locks for $18 additional dollars. I had never heard of such a thing. I had a padlock with me that I intended to put on the unit, as I have always done in the past when I have rented a storage unit. When I questioned him, the associate at first said that these were "much more secure" locks, which is why he was making us buy one. The building is already very secure, so I found that explanation to be silly. When I pressed him about it, he then said that he was required to sell us a lock, and he said it might just be a scheme to make more money for the company. Wow. I appreciate the honesty, but that's a major problem.
To make matters worse, when I took my first load of stuff to the space yesterday, there were an assortment of different locks on the units. So we didn't have to buy the lock directly from LifeStorage after all?!
2) I wanted to borrow the convenient LifeStorage truck they have at the facility to transport stuff from my house to the unit. The sales associate told me to fill up the gas tank before returning the vehicle - otherwise I would be charged $8 per gallon. My house was nearby, and I only took one trip. So I literally drove a total of 8 miles. After I dropped my stuff off, I asked the associate if it was really worth it for me to go back out to a gas station to fill up the tank, since I had used such a tiny amount of gas. He insisted that I do so. At the gas station, I discovered that in order to fill up the tank, I suddenly had to purchase almost 2.5 gallons. This meant the last person who used the truck did not fill it up, and I was now paying for the gas THEY used. I brought the receipt back to the associate, expecting to be given a refund for the amount I overpaid (about $8). The associate looked at the documented mileage that I drove. And he said even though he sees that I overpaid for gas I did not use, there was nothing he could do about it and "that's just the way it is". So, not only did I have to pay for 2 more gallons than what I used, but the storage space staff wouldn't (or didn't know how) giver me a refund or at least a credit for it.
3) Not only did I overpay for gas, but I also was required to pay $8 MORE, because the cost of renting the truck was 89 cents per mile, which they conveniently did not tell me BEFORE I rented the truck. You would think, considering the idiocy of having to pay for gas I did not use, they would let that charge slide. That would have signified an awareness of the moment and how displeased I was, and would have helped to make things right. But that didn't happen either.
Sean, I know that you are the manager of the store. My email address is and my number is 630-267-1987 if you would like to contact me. I requested copies of the transactions and told your associate I would be sending a complaint via the website. However, there is no place for me to send my complaint to your particular store on the website. I can only submit questions that limit me to a 500 characters. I did send a message through the website last week about the $18 required charge for the lock, but I never heard anything back from anyone.
Obviously, we are off to a really bad start here. If I don't hear from you, I will be needing to take my business elsewhere immediately. Thanks."
"We have had a unit with Life Storage in St Charles now for almost a year. Every time I have actually had to interact with someone (simply because there has been very few issues or needs), the employees there have gone above & beyond! From the very first time I met them until now, as I am preparing to move out. When I was initially renting the unit, the lady stayed 10 minutes past closing for me because I was running late & had a full truckload that I was desperate to unload!
The only time I needed their assistance DURING my stay was when we had a credit card issue (received new cards due to fraud, thus removing us from the auto withdrawal feature). Im not the best at checking voicemail or texts (in a timely manor) & so finally after like 3 or 4 attempts they were able to get a hold of me. I was truly blown away at how understanding they were, we gave them the new card (& my husbands phone # lol) & were good to go!
Now as we prepare to move out, I call panic stricken on the Friday before Memorial Day, after 5pm, practically begging for someone to call me back ASAP!?!?!! Well low & behold, not even 5 minutes later Sean calls me back!!! Then he takes care of my question! In a matter of 10 minutes I went from not knowing what I was going to do or if I would even be able to speak with someone today, to talked to Sean & problem solved! Thank you Sean & the lady before you who stayed late for me! It is rare to find people who are willing to go above & beyond anymore. Therefore it is super important that we show our gratitude for them!
But I understand this is a review (as well as a way to show appreciation), so with that being said let me also say this...The main reason I did not have too many interactions with these great people is because their system works! I never had any issues with the keypad system to get into my unit, the grounds as a whole are clean & safe, as I never once had any issues. Plus they drive around daily to make sure your lock is on properly (just in case!). It is also important to note that we used our storage unit often. We didnt just drop our stuff off & pick it up a year later. We have been building a house, so as I would find something for the house (or need it) I would bring it & drop it off/pick it up. On the average I would say I was in & out of the unit at least once a week.

He spent time to explain to me the different pricing, available units and how the security system works. I rented a climate controlled unit. All units are able to be driven up to. "Very poor customer service, within 3 days of being notified my automatic withdrawal didn't go through due to a new card issued, I called in and was told to come in a take care of everything, upon getting on the 6th I was charged a late fee which wasn't told to me over the phone nor was it on the boiling statement I received the day before on the 5th. Had I known there was going to be a late fee even though I called and since it was due to a new card being issued, they would have been more forgiving and understanding. Instead I was treated as if I stupid for not knowing late fees are applied after the 5th. I would have came in same day or paid over the phone if they would have mentioned it when I called or in the statement I received.
