While it might seem like the holidays are still a ways off, it sneaks up quickly! Now is the time to get organized. What do you want your holidays to look like this year? With a day or two of advance planning and preparation, you can be much more organized and ready to have the most stress-free and memorable holiday season ever!
Plan to Give Away
This is a great season to give things away. Start now to not only give to people in need, but to prepare your home for a simpler, more organized holiday season. Throw out worn or broken items, and give away items that are still in great condition and ready to be used by someone in need. You’ll feel happy that you helped impact someone’s life, and you will feel much better having less things cluttering the house.
Plan for Decorating
Are you decorating for the holidays this year? If so, how much do you want to do this year? Determine where all of your holiday decorations are stored and when you are going to bring them out. If you know you need to declutter and organize, take decorations out a few weeks before you are ready to decorate. Assess how easy your holiday items are to find and then make time to sort and give away what you don’t want. By simplifying your holiday decorations and organizational systems, you’ll make decorating more fun this year and in the future.
Plan for Parties
Are you hoping to host a holiday party this year? Now is definitely the time to make sure your friends save the date! To get organized, write up a list of things you would like to accomplish in your home before a party and give yourself doable deadlines to keep yourself on track. Consider menus, gifts, decorations and pre-holiday cleaning – but don’t get overwhelmed by unrealistic expectations. Keep it simple and manageable so that you can enjoy the holiday season while keeping your focus on welcoming guests.
Plan for Gifts
Are you making gifts this year? Are you giving friends and family individual gifts, or doing a gift exchange? Plan out a budget for your gift giving, whether it’s a total amount or an amount per person. If you plan for gift giving early enough, you will have time to consider alternative ways to give gifts this year, such as making your own gifts or suggesting a fun, themed gift exchange or creative activity for family and friends.
Plan a Gift Wrap Station
Wrapping special gifts can be a fun experience if you are prepared and organized in advance.Take inventory of your holiday wrapping paper and gift bags, tissue, tape, gift tags, etc. Toss out old, outdated or wrinkled paper. Gather new or existing wrapping and organize a special holiday wrapping bin in a closet or under-the-bed container. Even if you don’t have the luxury of a designated craft or wrapping room, organized portable bins can be easily brought to the dining room table when it is time to wrap.
Most of all, plan to celebrate and enjoy what matters most to you this season!
