What is Self Storage?

Self-service storage (commonly known as self storage) is a service provided to consumers and businesses that allows them to store their items at a facility in a room as small as a closest to as large as a three-car garage, and sometimes larger than that! Self storage is a great way to store your property without having to take up space in your home or office.

What is a climate controlled storage unit?

Climate controlled storage is the process of controlling the internal temperature of the storage facility. The primary benefit of climate controlled self storage is you don’t have to worry about extreme hot or cold temperatures damaging your items while being stored.  LifeStorage keeps its climate controlled storage facilities between 55 and 80 degrees.

What is a drive-up storage unit?

A drive-up storage unit is a storage unit that you can drive your vehicle right up to. Drive-up storage units are usually located outside; however, many LifeStorage facilities have inside drive-up access to storage units. A drive-up storage unit may or may not be climate controlled.

What is the difference between indoor storage and outdoor storage?

A storage unit located indoors is usually accessed via an elevator and located above the 1st floor; however, an indoor storage unit can be on the 1st floor. An outdoor storage unit is the classic type of self storage and is also known as a drive-up storage unit. An outdoor storage unit is accessed via your vehicle.

What is an on-site manager?

An on-site manager refers to an employee of the storage facility who lives on the premise where you’re storing your belongings. This helps increase the security of the storage facility since there is someone on the property during non-office hours.  LifeStorage has on-site managers at some of our facilities.

What is a roll-up door?

This is the most common type of door used in storage facilities. A roll-up door is opened, closed and locked via a sliding latch. When the roll-up door is unlocked and opened, it simply rolls upwards, helping maximize your storage space since you don’t need to worry about door-swing clearance.

What is a computerized entry system?

This is a modernized security system used to limit access to the facility. Each customer gets his or her own unique access code which allows him or her to enter and exit the property. All LifeStorage facilities have a computerized entry system. Without an access code you cannot enter a LifeStorage property.

Who is able to access my storage unit?

You can give anyone you wish access to your storage unit. It's your responsibility to provide them with a key and access code. LifeStorage employees will not grant someone access who is not on the rental agreement, nor do employees have access to your storage unit. We do this to increase the security and safety of our storage facilities.

How do I calculate how much storage space I need to rent?

When can I access my storage unit?

LifeStorage has standard storage access hours of 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. 365 days a year, and 24-hour access is available upon request.

Does LifeStorage provide moving carts and/or dollies?

Yes, every LifeStorage storage facility has moving carts and dollies that customers can use to help move their belongings in or out of our facility.

Do you offer moving services?

No, LifeStorage is a self storage provider and cannot provide help moving your belongings. However, your store manager can recommend some local moving companies that previous customers have used.

What forms of payment does LifeStorage accept?

LifeStorage accepts cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express).

How can I make a payment?

There are 3 ways you can pay your monthly storage rent. The easiest way is to use the Customer Account Portal and make a payment online. You can also call or visit your LifeStorage facility during business hours to make a payment.

Does LifeStorage offer or rent moving trucks?

LifeStorage does not rent moving trucks; however, some facilities are partnered with national truck rental companies and offer their trucks for rent. Contact your local LifeStorage facility today and see if they have rental trucks available.

When does LifeStorage conduct auctions at its storage facilities?

LifeStorage conducts auctions on a per facility basis. You can visit our events and auctions page to get the latest times and dates of auctions. We reserve the right to cancel all auctions without prior notice.

How long do I have to rent my storage unit?

LifeStorage rents storage units on a month-to-month basis, with no long-term contracts and no commitments. With LifeStorage, you only have to rent your storage space as long as you need it.

How much notice must be given when I move out?

The standard notice for LifeStorage is a 5-day written notice, but it can very due to local and state regulations. Please refer to your rental agreement or contact your facility store manager for more details.

How far in advance can I reserve a storage unit?

LifeStorage allows customers to reserve a storage unit up to 30 days in advance.

Can I rent a storage unit online?

Yes, LifeStorage allows you to rent a storage unit online up to 14 days in advance. If you want to rent a storage unit online first, find a storage facility near you. Then once you’re on that facility’s web page, you can opt to either reserve or rent a storage unit.

How far in advance can I rent a storage unit online?

LifeStorage allows customers to rent a storage unit online up to 14 days in advance. Your billing cycle doesn’t start until the day you elected to move-in.

How does the billing cycle work when renting a storage unit?

LifeStorage uses an anniversary billing cycle. This means your due date will fall on the anniversary of the date you moved into your storage unit. For example, if you moved in on May 22nd, your next due date will be June 22nd.

What information is required when renting a storage unit?

To a rent a storage unit at LifeStorage, you’ll need to be 18 years of age or older and be able to provide a valid state or government issued I.D., a valid physical address and an emergency contact.

Do I need to have insurance when I rent at LifeStorage?

Yes, all customers of LifeStorage are required to carry insurance. This is a standard practice in the self storage industry and is used to protect you and your belongings. If you do not have an insurance policy that covers your items, we offer equivalent protection via our 5-Star Protection Plans.
